NEW DELHI: The defense ministry on Tuesday gave preliminary approval to three indigenous capital acquisition proposals, involving Helina anti-tank guided missiles to arm advanced light helicopters, worth Rs 4,276 crore.
The Rajnath Singh-led Defense Acquisitions Council (DAC) also agreed AoN (acceptance of necessity) for procurement of infra-red homing VSHORADS (very short range air defense systems) missiles under design and development by DRDO at a cost of Rs 1,920 crore
“In view of the recent developments along the northern borders with China, there is a need to focus on effective air defense weapon systems like the VSHORADS that are portable, can be deployed quickly in rugged terrain and maritime domains and neutralize low-altitude aerial threats an official said.
The DAC also accorded AoN for procurement of around 500 Helina anti-tank guided missiles, launchers and associated support equipment which will be integrated on the indigenous advanced light helicopters. “This missile is an essential part of weaponisation of ALHs for countering enemy threats. Its induction will strengthen the Army’s offensive capability,” he said.
The nod was also given for the procurement of the launchers and fire control systems for the Brahmos supersonic cruise missiles for the Shivalik class of stealth frigates and the next-generation missile vessels (NGMVsfor the Navy, “With their induction, these warships would have enhanced capability of carrying out maritime strike operations, interdicting and destroying enemy’s warships and merchant vessels,” he added.
